BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

William H. Jolly (ca. 1842–1863) was probably born in Perry, Pike County, Ohio.  In August, 1862 he was living in Sunman, Indiana and enlisted as a private in Company G of the 83rd Indiana Regiment.  Jolly died in Memphis, Tennessee on 31 August 1863.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The letter in this collection was written by William H. Jolly while serving with the 83rd Indiana Regiment at Johnson’s Landing, Yazoo River, to his parents on 17 June 1863.  Jolly writes exclusively about the siege of Vicksburg and its impending fall.
