BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

The journal in this collection pertains to Smyrna Township, Jefferson County, Indiana. Surnames of Smyrna Township residents mentioned include (among others): Armstrong, Conway, Duffy, Gassaway, Hensley, Low, Martin, McGary, Park, Piper, Ramsey, Riggle, and Wallace.

The journal possibly belonged to the Wallace family, who resided in the area, but the journal includes little personal information, making positive identification of ownership difficult. Wallace family names mentioned in the journal include: J. M. Wallace, James Wallace, Lizzie S. Wallace, and Nellie M. Wallace. Nellie (b. ca. 1873) was the daughter of George Wallace (b. ca. 1832 in Kentucky) and Lizzie S. Wallace (b. ca. 1845 in Indiana).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The first portion of the journal contains financial records for Smyrna Township in Jefferson County, Indiana for the years 1845–59. Included are monies paid to various districts within the township, and to individuals such as the county treasurer, school commissioner, teachers, and trustees. Money was also placed into saline and sinking funds, and set aside for road and bank taxes.

Someone utilized the second part of the journal to record the weather every day from January 1876–April 1882. There are brief daily comments in a calendar-style format, and more detailed comments entitled “memoranda” at the end of each year discussing flooding, lack of rain, road conditions, crops, farming activities such as harvesting and sowing, hunting, insect infestations, and diseases like ague and typhoid fever. A notation in the memoranda for 9 March 1882 indicates, “This is the last writing father ever did. He died April 3.” Two loose newspaper clippings providing weather forecasts were removed from the journal.

Along with the financial records and the weather notations mentioned above, the third part of the journal consists of a few undated meeting notes recorded for the Advent Christian Sunday School at the Volga Church in Jefferson County. Officers of the Sunday School included Nellie M. Wallace, Lizzie S. Wallace, Asa Judkins, and Frank Judkins.

Lastly, there is a short note dated 28 October 1896 for Literary Club monies collected. No names are mentioned under this entry.
