BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Lelah C. Jines was born ca. November 1878 in Indiana, the daughter of Isaac Newton Jines and Agnes L. Ralston. Other children of the couple included Annie M., Hunter, Pearl M., Maud E., Bessie H., Maggie, and Roy M. Jines. The 1900 census indicates the family lived in Jinestown, Monroe Township, Jefferson County, Indiana.

On 7 April 1903, Lelah C. Jines married a farmer named Walter J. Giddings (born ca. 1875). They lived in Lancaster Township in Jefferson County, Indiana. Lelah and Walter had at least five children: Nellie, Benjamin, Daisy, Fred, and George Giddings.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains the correspondence of the Jines and Giddings families. Much of the collection consists of love letters exchanged between Lelah Jines and Walter Giddings during their courtship. Lelah was working in North Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana, presumably as a domestic helper, and Walter wrote to her from Faulkner, Jefferson County, Indiana. Topics included Lelah’s employment, Walter’s use of alcohol, family members’ activities, illnesses, and feelings of love and jealousy.

There are also a few letters written to Lelah from her sister Pearl, and a letter from a friend of Walter’s approving his courtship of Lelah.
