BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Jesse Keithley (sometimes spelled Keithly) was born in 1806 in Iowa, and later in his life moved to Indiana. On August 16, 1825, Keithley married Polly Donica in Lawrence County, Indiana. The couple had eight children. Keithley enlisted as a Captain in the “G” Company of the Indiana 4th Cavalry on August, 8, 1862 from Bedford, Indiana. He served in the Army for under a year, when he died of an illness on March 3, 1863.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains two signed letters: one from Jesse Keithley to his wife on October 27, 1862, and the other was written by Jesse’s son, J.W. Keithley, to his mother on February 5, 1864. The letters mainly consist of family talk, updates on combat and general living conditions of the soldiers.
