James M. Pierson joined the Army of the Confederate States of America as a private. By 1863, he was serving as a first sergeant in Company B of the 1st Regiment Tennessee Heavy Artillery (Jackson’s Regiment).
Pierson was captured at the Battle of Vicksburg, also known as the Siege of Vicksburg, from 18 May to 4 July 1863. During this battle, Major General Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Tennessee succeeded in obtaining the surrender of Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton and the Army of Vicksburg, thus gaining control over the Mississippi River.
