NOTES: |
|
Flatboats are long rectangular boats with flat bottoms and squared ends used to carry freight along inland rivers and canals. The flatboats were the popular form of transportation for American settlers who traveled on the Allegheny, Mississippi and Ohio Rivers during the early to mid nineteenth century before steamboats and locomotives became prominent.

The collection consists of one contract signed by James A. Bryan, Robert Flinn, and George Daile, of Jackson County, Indiana, on February 5, 1821. In it they are bound to William Russell of Washington County to build a flat bottom boat by the following October. The boat was to be used to take a load down to New Orleans. The letter discusses the specifics of the agreement over the cost, payment, and dimensions of the flatboat.
