The collection consists of one letter written by William H. Hikes to his parents on 3 October 1861. Hikes mentions his battery has just left Carnifex Ferry and they are on the road to Louisburg, Virginia (later West Virginia). The battery is near Big Sewell Mountain overlooking a Confederate encampment and waiting for artillery reinforcement. Hikes states General Rosecrans just visited the battery. On the back of the letter, Hikes drew a map of his camp and the Confederate camp.
