BIOGRAPHiCAL/historical SKETCH

Dudley E. Buck was born in New York in 1823, but resided in Sigourney, Iowa.  He married Rachel Holcomb on 27 April 1843.  Dudley enlisted in the Iowa 13th Infantry on 21 October 1861.  After re-enlisting on 1 January 1864, he served until he was mustered out on 21 July 1865.  He had two cousins in the Indiana 54th Infantry.

The Iowa 13th Infantry Regiment was mustered in sometime between 18 October and 1 November 1861.  It saw fighting in Tennessee, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, and especially Georgia, where it participated in the battle for Atlanta.  It was mustered out in July 1865.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains three letters written by Dudley E. Buck to his uncle while he served in the Iowa 13th Infantry.  In all three letters he seems concerned about the fact that not all of his correspondence is getting through to his family and friends, and not all of their letters are getting through to him.

The three letters were written near Vicksburg on 1 July 1863, from Clifton, Tennessee, on 5 May 1864, and near Atlanta on 31 July 1864 respectively. In the first letter Dudley recalls a skirmish with Confederate forces and indicates that although he knows he has cousins in the Indiana 54th, which was “In this vicinity,” he had not met them.  The second letter indicates he has not received any letters from Indiana since his wife Rachel left there, and also laments the poor conditions of the people in the South.  The final letter describes in detail a few battles and names some friends who were killed.
