Information in collection.
The four-page letter is from Rev. J. E. Chapin with the Christian Commission in the South in Huntsville, Alabama, to his sister Anna Chapin in Reelsville, Putnam County, Indiana, 24 May 1864.
Chapin talks about the educational system in the south and compares it to the north’s. (Anna Chapin was a teacher in Putnam County.) He also talks of a battle 10 miles away with the Confederates under the command of Nathan Bedford Forrest, and tells of his accommodations in Huntsville and preaching to the Union troops.
