NOTES: |
|
Chauncey Pritchard was originally from Prairieton, Indiana. He enlisted on 21 December 1863 as a private and was mustered into Company E of the 85th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He was mustered out on 19 July 1865.
The 85th Regiment was organized at Terre Haute, Indiana, on 2 September 1862 with Colonel John P. Baird. Its first engagement in battle was an encounter with General Forrest’s army at Thompson’s Station, Tennessee. Over-powered and completely surrounded, the 85th was forced to surrender, but only did so after it had exhausted their ammunition. The regiment was sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, and was exchanged in March 1863.
The 85th participated in Sherman’s campaign through Georgia as part of the Second brigade of the Third division. It was the directing regiment at Averysboro, North Carolina, on 16 March 1865. It then moved to Goldsboro, Raleigh Richmond and Washington, and was mustered out June 12, 1865. The men were transferred to the 33rd Indiana and served with that regiment until its muster-out, July 21.

The diary begins on 4 January 1864 and consistently contains entries through 10 September 1864. There are few entries after that, and Pritchard’s handwriting gets worse in them. He documented weather conditions, expressed observations and personal feelings, talked about his health and sickness, and conditions in camp. Many entries begin “nothing new.”
In the back there is a section where Pritchard kept track of his expenses. Most of these pages have been torn out, but a few still remain in the book.
