BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Holman Hamilton (1910–80) was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of Dr. Allen Hamilton.  He attended Williams College in Massachusetts and received a degree in English in 1932.  Upon graduation Hamilton returned to Fort Wayne where the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette employed him as a reporter.  At this time he met Claude G. Bowers, who encouraged and helped develop his love of history.

Hamilton resigned from the Journal-Gazette in 1934 to do independent historical research, but he returned to the paper in the spring of the following year when he was offered the job of editor.  While serving as editor for the Fort Wayne newspaper, Hamilton continued his historical research and in 1941 he published volume 1 of a biography, Zachary Taylor:  Soldier of the Republic.

During World War II Hamilton enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a captain in the Pacific Theater attached to the staff of General Douglas MacArthur.  After the war Hamilton returned to his work in Fort Wayne and in 1951 he published the second volume of Zachary Taylor:  Soldier in the White House.

Hamilton left the Journal-Gazette in 1951 and entered graduate school at the University of Kentucky.  Three years later he completed his doctorate and accepted the position of assistant professor of history.  Hamilton published books and articles at Kentucky and served on several boards and commissions.  In 1969 he became Harlan Professor of History, and he became distinguished professor of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1972.  He retired from the teaching in 1975 but continued writing and publishing until his death in 1980.
