This collection contains one small notebook, the diary of Robert Taylor from 1 January 1863 to 1 January 1864. In the midst of a war, Taylor, a Democrat, was a good deal more interested in farming and local politics than in soldiering. When men were called into home guard service in July 1863 at the time of Morgan's raid into southern Indiana, Taylor decided that no one had the right to force him to serve; he then went home to greet "an old friend from the southern army" who had worked for him, and later "disbelieved" the reports about Morgan.
