James Keigwin was born in Jeffersonville, Clark County Indiana in 1829. On October 18, 1862, he was mustered into the Forty Ninth Indiana regiment as a corporal. The Forty Ninth fought in several battles, including the Battle of Vicksburg, and marched a total of eight thousand miles throughout the War. Keigwin was mustered out on November 29, 1864 at the expiration of his term.

The collection consists of Keigwin's twenty five page handwritten history of Jeffersonville (Indiana) Soldiers, 1776-1865. The history, consisting of personal recollections and experiences, contains names of and stories about Jeffersonville soldiers in the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Tippecanoe, the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the War for Texas Independence, and the Civil War. Keigwin at times includes locations of businesses, people's homes, and cemeteries in his descriptions of Jeffersonville.
