HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Lake Erie Wabash and St. Louis Railroad was founded in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana in 1852. It extended across Indiana from Vermillion County in the west to DeKalb County in the northeast.

The U.S.S. Alaska was the first of the 27,500 ton battle cruisers to join the United States fleet during World War II. She was stationed in the South Pacific where she performed air strikes on Okinawa and neighboring islands.

Cornelius Callahan, son of Timothy and Ann Hogan Callahan, was born in Linday, Canada on August 15, 1841. After his arrival in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, Callahan was engaged as a clerk in a local grocery store. After a brief stint in the Civil War, he returned to the town and started a retail grocery business in 1865. The C. Callahan Grocery Company remained in operation until 1959. Callahan died in 1922.
