Infantry Regiment, 68th (1862–1865)
Letter, 1862 Aug. 28, Bardstown, Ky.
The 68th Indiana Volunteer Regiment was organized at Greensburg on 19 August 1862. It was immediately sent to Louisville, Kentucky. Leaving Louisville on 25 August, it moved to Munfordville, where it fought a portion of Bragg's forces for two days and then surrendered. It was paroled to Indianapolis. It later served in Tennessee, fighting at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga.
Most of the men in Company B of the 68th came from Osgood in Ripley County; others came from nearby Versailles, Elrod, and Holton. Captain Daniel Boswell, who commanded Company B in 1862, came from Osgood; he resigned because of incompetence on 24 March 1863.
