BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Anthony Pohl lived and owned farm land in Celina, Perry County, Indiana. He served as state-appointed truant officer for Perry County in 1900-1901.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection, filling one folder, contains letters, deeds, printed forms filled in, and printed notices, from the years 1900-1901. Items in the collection indicate that the truant officer, as the only representative of the State in a rural area, was expected to perform a number of seemingly unrelated functions:

- watching the polls;

- calling a township school meeting to handle such matters as letting a contract for wood for the schoolhouse;

- hearing complaints from people who claimed they had been mobbed at a school meeting.

A bill which Pohl submitted shows that he spent part of his time visiting the different townships in the county and part writing letters to the parents of delinquent scholars.
