BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

The Pumphrey family settled in Fayette County, Indiana, around 1812. Silas Pumphrey (fl. 1817-1824) married Rachel Mills (fl. 1817-1819), daughter of Levi Mills. Silas and Rachel had at least one son, Levi Mills Reason Pumphrey. According to the letter in this collection, he and Rachel also had a daughter. She was born in March 1817, but died the following month.

Barrows states that Silas Pumphrey, Sr., purchased ten acres and laid out a cemetery in Fayette County on 8 October 1851 (p. 544). It is likely that he was the Silas mentioned above.
