BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

John Downey came from Ireland to Virginia in 1766. He had three sons, Darby, John and William, and one daughter, Mary. Darby (d. 1832) inherited his father's land. He was married three times, and was the father of eight children. One of his sons, William (1779-1862), moved to Rush County, Indiana with four of his grown children, Elizabeth b. 1805), Permelia (1807-1897), Eleazer (1819-1907), and John Darby (1810-1897). Another daughter, Sarah (1804-1892), also located to Rush County with her husband, John Miller. Additional genealogical information on the Downey family is contained in this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of typescripts of papers relating to the Downey family of Rush County, Indiana. Included are genealogical notes (ca. 1940's?); a copy of a land grant to John Downey (1766); two marriage contracts (1793, n.d.); the last will and testament of Darby Downey (1820); and memoirs, with corrections, written by an unidentified member of the family (n.d.).
