HISTORICAL SKETCH

John Clapper was born circa 1843, the son of Jacob and Sarah Priddy Clapper. A resident of Henry County, Indiana, he was mustered into the One Hundred Thirty Fourth Indiana Infantry on May 24, 1864 at Camp Morton in Indianapolis. Clapper's military career lasted less than two months as he died in Nashville, Tennessee on July 13, 1864.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one letter, dated May 25, 1864, written by Clapper to his parents from Camp Morton in Indianapolis. Clapper discusses his mustering in and the appearance of Governor Oliver P. Morton in camp. Also included is a photograph of Clapper taken in Union uniform in 1864. It is stored in Visual Collections.
