BIOGRAPHiCAL/historical SKETCH

Jay Small (30 October 1917-27 January 2000) was an Indianapolis antiques dealer. His personal interests included collecting images and books related to Indiana history.

The Ballard Ice Cream Company sold milk and ice cream to Indianapolis and the surrounding community for seventy-five years.  In 1876 the founder, William H. Ballard, was a partner in Thompson and Ballard, a milk depot on North Delaware Street.  By 1877, Ballard was in business for himself at Ballard’s Milk Depot, also on North Delaware street.  In 1888, Ballard renamed the company Ballard Ice Cream to reflect the new focus of his business.  The company relocated to 315 North Alabama Street in 1903, where it stayed until Ballard Ice Cream went out of business after 1952.
