NOTES: |

L(ewis) Roy Zapf was born 22 October 1884 in Delaware County, Indiana, the son of Jacob (b. 1855) and Lydia (Green) Zapf (b. 1854). Census records indicate that Jacob was born in New York, although an item in the collection states that he was born in Indiana. Jacob worked in the furniture business and as a cabinet maker.
There is some confusion about Roy’s siblings. One source states that he was the third of four children. There is a photograph in the collection identified as being of Roy Zapf with brother Lacy (or Lacey) and sister; the girl appears to be the youngest. The 1900 census lists Jacob and Lydia with no children, but with a “boarder” named Harry Zapf (born September 1880 in Ohio) and his wife, Laura. In the 1910 (Alabama) census, Harry and Laura are still living with Jacob and Lydia, but are listed as son and daughter-in-law. In 1920, Jacob and Harry and their wives are all living in Georgia, but not together. No census record was found that showed Lewis Roy, Lacy, or a daughter living with Jacob and Lydia. Lacy Courtland Zapf was born ca. 1882, but appears to have been a junior at Muncie High School the same year that his younger brother Roy was also a junior there.
L. Roy Zapf graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, in 1906. He received a master’s degree in diplomacy from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in 1909, and a law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 1912. He practiced law in the District of Columbia until returning to Indiana around 1914–15. He practiced corporate and commercial law in Indianapolis, and maintained his practiced until he retired in 1968. He also served as a law professor at the Indiana Law School in Indianapolis, teaching courses in international and constitutional law, trusts, and conflict of laws from 1918 until 1945. He was also corporation attorney and vice-chairman of the board of directors of Peoples Bank & Trust Company.
Roy Zapf married Mabel Rose on 21 October 1910, and they had a daughter Margaret Rose Zapf (later Mrs. Kennard K. King). He was a founder of the Indianapolis Morris Plan and the Hillcrest Country Club, and a member of the Downtown Optimist Club (elected “Outstanding Member” in 1950), the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity (along with his brother Lacey while at DePauw), the Indiana and Indianapolis Bar Associations, and the Columbia Club. He attended Meridian Street United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening and owned a farm in Hendricks County, Indiana. He died in April 1972 at the age of eighty-nine.

This collection consists of materials relating to L. Roy Zapf, a Delaware County, Indiana, native and an Indianapolis attorney, and some of his family members. The collection is arranged into series as detailed below.
Series 1, Photographs: This series consists of seven black-and-white photographs, including one of Roy Zapf as a child (about age 7) with his brother and sister, one of him during his high school years (about age 16), and one of him at age 65. One photograph is identified as being of Roy Zapf’s grandparents, but does not indicate whether they are his mother’s or father’s parents. The other three photographs were identified simply as Zapf family members. Most of the photographs were taken in Muncie, Indiana. All but the one of Roy Zapf at age 65 were taken around the 1890s or 1900.
Series 2, Muncie High School Yearbooks: This series is composed of two issues of the XYZ Annual – from 1902 and 1903.
Series 3, Manuscripts, Clippings, and Ephemera: This series includes a photocopy of a newspaper obituary for Roy Zapf, two typed pages of biographical information about Roy Zapf, a 1900 certificate with Roy Zapf’s name entered as a Muncie High School Cadet, Roy Zapf’s 1906 diploma from DePauw University, and the 1906 commencement program for DePauw.
