NOTES: |

Hubert Howard Hawkins was the executive secretary of the Indiana Historical Society and director of the Indiana Historical Bureau from 1953 to 1976. He was born 22 August 1916 in Marion County, Indiana, to Albert and Grace Hawkins. He graduated from DePauw University in 1938 and received his master’s degree in history from Western Reserve University in 1940. He completed all the requirements but a dissertation for a doctoral degree at the University of Pennsylvania.
While in the army during World War II, he served in Europe for more than two years with the Education and Information Service. He was awarded the Bronze Star and British Empire Medal.
Early in his career he worked briefly for the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Mississippi Valley Historical Review. He taught at Buffalo State and Butler universities, and later taught the first telecourse in political science on WRTV-Channel 6 in Indianapolis.
During his work with the Historical Society, Hawkins traveled extensively throughout Indiana presenting hundreds of speeches on Indiana history to historical societies, social clubs, and other groups, and thus was instrumental in increasing the Society’s membership. He was actively involved with the Indiana Junior Historical Society, a program for schoolchildren. Upon his retirement, leadership of the Indiana Historical Bureau and the IHS was separated into two positions. In 2003, the Hubert Hawkins History Award was established to recognize excellent service in the field of local history in Indiana.
Hawkins also served as president of the Indianapolis Literary Club, and was a member of the Indiana Academy, American Legion Post 4, and the Society of Indiana Pioneers.
Hawkins died on 3 October 1996, and was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. He was survived by his wife, Helen, and three children.
