historiCAL SKETCH

The sheet of real photo stamps in this collection apparently is an unusual item.  The dealer from whom the stamps were purchased noted that he had “never come across anything like this.”  A search for information on this format yielded one Web site with scans of two similar sheets of real photo stamps from Massachusetts.  The estimated date for these stamps was 1930s–1940s.  The scan of the accompanying envelope that held the stamps was identical in style to the one in this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of a sheet of sixteen real photo (non-postage) stamps, the original envelope that held this sheet, and two loose duplicate real photo stamps that may have been attached to the corners on the front of the envelope. The photos are of various buildings and scenes in the city of South Bend, Indiana, and include some views of the University of Notre Dame.

The sheet measures 3 ˝ x 5 ˝ inches, with each photo stamp measuring about 7/8 x 1 3/8 inches.  The back of the sheet is gummed, and there are perforations between each individual photo stamp.

The envelope measures 3 5/8 x 6 ˝ inches, is pink, and has an oblong oval window in the lower half of the front.  The front contains the following text:  “16 Real Photo Stamps gummed and perforated of South Bend, Ind.  Brugners News Corner, South Bend, Ind. --TEN CENTS --.”
