historiCAL SKETCH

The photographs in this collection show examples of stone and concrete bridges built in Indianapolis between 1905 and ca. 1912. These structures replaced existing wood and iron bridges in residential and industrial areas of the city.

Architect Henry W. Klaussman designed two structures featured in this collection: the College Avenue Bridge (1905) and the Thirtieth Street Bridge (1906). Both bridges spanned Fall Creek.  The College Avenue Bridge was considered an engineering marvel, as its piers were set at an angle, in line with the flow of the water rather than the roadway above. At the time of construction the Thirtieth Street Bridge featured two stone mermaids on its central buttresses.

The Emrichsville Bridge (1906) crossed the White River at the south end of Riverside Park. This imposing edifice featured a stone archway and a corner tower. The bridge was razed in 1949.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains fourteen black-and-white photographs of road and railway bridges in Indianapolis. An unidentified photographer made at least six images on 23 and 24 February 1935.

The images include views of the Thirtieth Street, Emrichsville, College Avenue, Garfield Park, New York Street, and Morris Street bridges. Six photographs include identification on the verso of the image. The processor identified five photographs by comparing the items to images in other photographic collections. Titles and numbers supplied by the processor are enclosed in square [ ] brackets. One photograph of a railway bridge is not identified, but the structure is a massive edifice characteristic of bridges built by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.
