BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

The Methodist Church founded the Valparaiso Male and Female College at the present site of Valparaiso University in 1859.  The institution became the Northern Indiana Normal School and Business College in 1873, and Valparaiso College in 1900.  Corboy Hall appears to be a residence or rooming house for students.

At least 2,000 students were enrolled at Valparaiso College in 1900.  Lembke Hall housed male students on the college campus, and women students stayed at Altruria Hall.  Other students lived in rooming houses in town.  Corboy Hall may have been named for the Corboy family of Valparaiso.  S. P. Corboy taught in the Phonographic Department of Northern Indiana Normal School and Business College in 1885, and the Corboy family name appears in the 1907 city directory.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains eleven photographs made in Valparaiso, Indiana, and one photograph made in Silver Creek, New York. Eight photographs are snapshots, possibly made by a student at the Northern Indiana Normal School and Business College, or Valparaiso College, in 1900. The images include young men boating and swimming on Sagers Lake, and a view of the lake. Two snapshots show the interior of a room at Corboy Hall. Three group portraits of students in front of Corboy Hall include a young man, D. D. Hill. He is the only individual identified in the portraits. A fourth portrait of students includes the annotation “The Corboy Hall Gang” and a stamp “D. D. Hill, Angola New York.” The snapshot made in Silver Springs, New York, shows three cats sleeping in the winter sun on the steps of the John Johnt residence.
