BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Thomas W. Birum operated the Birum Hotel on East Main Street, Hartford City, Indiana, from ca. 1916 until his death in October, 1928.

Birum, the son of Robert and Jane Birum, was born near Union City, Indiana, 24 August 1864. He married Anna Laura Coby in 1896 and lived for a short time in Whitewater, Wayne County, and for twenty years in Redkey. He operated the hotel at Redkey before purchasing the Hartford Hotel and the Parker House. The Parker House became the Birum Hotel, and operated as an annex to the Hartford Hotel until 1922. Birum sold the Hartford Hotel at this time and operated the Birum Hotel as an independent hostelry.

Birum was a member of the Elk's Lodge and the Knights of Pythias.

The photographer's studio name "Burris Smith" is embossed on the mounts. The images may have been taken ca. 1922, when Birum chose to operate the business as a hostelry.
