HISTORICAL SKETCH

Gary Matthews (born ca 1821) was born in Davy County, North Carolina. A wagon-maker by trade, he enlisted in Company I, 38th Indiana Infantry, at Paoli, Indiana, in August 1861. He was discharged "by permission" in April 1862.

The 38th Indiana was organized at New Albany in September 1861. Most of the men in Company I came from Orange County (county seat Paoli). The regiment moved to Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and spent the fall and winter at Camp Nevin. In February 1862 they joined Buell's army and moved against Bowling Green and Nashville. In March 1862 they moved through Franklin to Columbia. After Matthews's discharge, the regiment fought at Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Lookout Mountain.
