BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

The Presidential election of 1860 featured four candidates:  Stephen A. Douglas and John C. Breckinridge under the Democrat Party (Douglas for the North and Breckinridge the South), John C. Bell of the Constitutional Union Party (the party derived from the Whig Party), and Abraham Lincoln from the Republican Party.  The election was heavily split between Northern and Southern values, most of which centered on the issue of slavery.  And despite only receiving 39% of the popular vote, Abraham Lincoln won 180 electoral votes from the more densely populated north to win the election.  Stephen Douglas was second in the popular vote at 29.5%, but was only able to accumulate 12 electoral votes.  Southern Democrat John Breckinridge came in second with 72 electoral votes.  The state of Indiana cast its 13 electoral votes in favor of Lincoln, who had slightly over 51% of the state’s vote.  A year after the election, South Carolina among other southern states seceded from the Union, and the start of the Civil War soon followed.
