Cataloged as: Main Author: United States. Army
Indiana Infantry Regiment, 22nd (1861-1865). |
William F. Allee was born in Hendricks County, Indiana, on 26 January 1844. Allee first enlisted as a private on 15 August 1861 and was mustered into Co. K of the Indiana 22nd Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant on 28 November 1864 and was then promoted to captain on 1 May 1865. Allee participated in every engagement in which the 22nd Regiment was involved. After the war’s end, Allee married Eliza Merrill Parker and had four children.
The 22nd Indiana Infantry Regiment was organized at Madison, Indiana, on 15 July 1861 and was mustered in for three years in Indianapolis. On 17 August 1861 the regiment moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to join the army of General Fremont. Along with Fremont’s army, the 22nd marched to Springfield, back to Otterville and then, in December, moved with other troops and captured about 1,300 prisoners at Blackwater, Missouri.
On 31 December 1862 and 1–2 January 1863, the regiment actively participated in the Battle of Stone River, where numerous men were lost. The 22nd participated in the charge up Mission Ridge on 25 November 1863. In 1864, the regiment became a part of Sherman’s army in Chattanooga and also had an active role in the siege of Savannah, 16-21 December 1864. The regiment continued to serve with the battle of Averysboro on 16 March 1865. After Johnston’s army surrendered, the regiment moved to Washington, D.C., where, in June 1865, it was mustered out of service.

This collection contains a roll book of the 22nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company K, 1861-65. The information included about the soldiers includes their height, complexion, eye and hair color, town or county and state of origin, and occupation. The roll includes the date on which they enlisted, where they enlisted, who enlisted them, how long their term was, and what happened to them in the war.
William F. Allee annotated the verso of page 1 of the roll book with comments about the history of the regiment, statistics on its casualties, and what may be an explanation of how he came to retain the roll book: “When I returned this book, after the Desk [sic] had been sent away, the officer in charge said: ‘Get out of here. Dont want anything to do with you. Too busy.’” There are two sets of annotations: those written in soft pencil, probably in the summer of 1865, and those in pen, written in 1901.
