HISTORICAL SKETCH

Thomas McCormick (d. 1864) was a resident of Newburg, Warrick County, Indiana. He served with the 120th Indiana Regiment, Company G, and died at camp in Knoxville, Tennessee, during an outbreak of measles in July, 1864.

The 120th Indiana Regiment (1863-1865) was organized during the winter of 1863-1864, and was mustered into service in March, 1864. In April, the regiment was sent to Nashville, then Charleston, TN, where it joined the 23rd Army Corps and Sherman's campaign against Atlanta. In October, 1864, the 120th Indiana (as part of the 23rd Army Corps) was detached from Sherman's army and sent to Nashville. It fought at Franklin, TN, (Nov. 30) and Nashville (Dec. 15-16). The regiment was transported to Washington, D.C., then to Newbern, North Carolina. It rejoined Sherman's army in March, 1865. The 120th Indiana served throughout North Carolina at Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro until it was mustered out in January 1866.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of a muster roll (22 x 18 in.) for the 120th Indiana Regiment, Company G. It lists officers and soldiers who served with the company. The roll belonged to Thomas McCormick, a soldier in company G.
