Ralph Bond (1927–1951) was born in Vincennes, Indiana but grew up in Bicknell, Indiana and graduated from high school there in 1947 and started work as a carpenter’s apprentice. In September 1950 Bond enlisted in the U. S. Army and was part of Company G of the Fifth Cavalry Division. On June 1, 1951 he was killed in action near Yongchon, Korea.

The collection contains correspondence and printed items regarding Ralph Bond and his death during the Korean War. Among the items are letters written by Ralph to his brother, George Bond, and his family in Hammond, Indiana, December 1950–May 1951 describing the fighting in Korea and other personal subjects. There also are letters of condolence to George Bond from his boss and Ralph’s girl friend as well as a memorial card for his burial ceremony in November 1951. Additional materials include newspaper clippings from the Bicknell Daily News regarding Ralph’s death, envelopes of returned letters marked “deceased” and a colored formal portrait of Ralph Bond.
