NOTES: |
Formerly SC 1903 |
W.C. (William Campbell) Patton (1836–?) from Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana served in the Civil War for three years (October 1861– October 1864) with the 37th Regiment Indiana Volunteers Company K. His granddaughters Lois Patton and Weber and Dorothy P. Tucker (nče Patton) donated his diaries to the Indiana Historical Society in 1984 and a tintype photograph in 1991.
According to the Report of W.H.H. Terrell Adjutant General, Indiana the 37th Regiment was organized in Lawrenceburg, on the 18th of September, 1861 with George W. Hazzard as Colonel. The regiment marched along the line of the Louisville and Nashville railroad to Bowling Green. Most of the time it was engaged in guarding the bridges of the Nashville and Chattanooga railroad. The regiment engaged in the battle of Stone River on the 31st of December, 1862 and January 1-2 1863, losing 25 killed and 106 wounded. It participated in the Chatanooga campaign and engaged in the battle of Chicamauga on the 19th and 20th of September, losing eight wounded men. The regiment saw battle again in Resacca on the 15th of May 1864 and at Dallas on the 27th, losing heavily. It also took part in the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, Chattahoochie River and Peach Tree Creek. After the occupation of Atlanta the non-veterans were ordered to Indianapolis, where they were mustered out in the month of October. The remaining five veteran companies and recruits were mustered out on the 25th of July, 1865 after the surrender of Johnston’s army, altogether 150 men.
