HistoriCAL SKETCH

The Ku Klux Klan was a major factor in the lives of Indianapolis citizens in the 1920s.  It was reported that between 27-40 percent of Indianapolis white, native born and Protestant men belong to this organization that had a major political influence on local politics supporting nativism, bigotry and prohibition.  The Klan’s Indianapolis office opened in 1921and by the summer of the following year, claimed a membership of 5,000 representing a broad spectrum of the population including the rich and the poor.  The Klan achieved its greatest influence in government with the election of members Ed Jackson as governor in 1924 and John Duvall as the city’s mayor the following year. Corruption and other scandal eventually forced Duvall and the Klan supported administration out of city government and the membership and popularity declined with the conviction of Grand Dragon D. C. Stephenson for second degree murder in 1925.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection is a 929 page membership ledger of Klan members in Indianapolis, Acton, Wanamaker, Crawfordsville and other Indiana locations whose last names begins with the letter S–Z from the 1924.  It was one of a multiple volume set that was reportedly maintained by D. C. Stephenson storefront company in Indianapolis.  The other volumes apparently were destroyed over time.  Information includes names, addresses, occupations, whether they were charter members, and whether they were naturalized citizens.  It also lists dues paid by quarters ($1.50 per quarter).
