BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Perry W. Lesh (1896–1987) was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and educated at DePauw University.  In July 1917 he enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison as a member of Battery A, 150th Field Artillery, 42nd Division and served in France during World War I attaining the rank of corporal.  Lesh saw action at the St. Mihel offensive, September-October 1918. Lesh was discharged in 1919.  Upon returning to Indianapolis, he began working at the C. P. Lesh Paper Company and became the company’s chairman in 1939.  Lesh was also a founding member of The Service Club of Indianapolis, an organization founded in 1920 by veterans of the First World War.  Lesh married Mary Hoke in 1921.  They had two sons: Charles Perry Lesh and Frederick Hoke Lesh.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains an oral history with Lesh conducted by Wayne Sanford in 1982.  The history is transcribed and relates to Lesh’s World War I experiences.  There also are related original materials given by Lesh to Sanford including a diary kept from October –November, 1918; a panoramic photograph of the Battery A, 150th Field Artillery; a commemorative graphic of the unit, ca. 1919; and a copy of the Provisional Drill and Service Regulations for Field Artillery (Light and Heavy), 1916.
