NOTES: |
|
John Poor was born on 26 November 1775 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts. His parents were Joseph Poore and Margaret Bailey. On 30 November 1797, John Poor married Hannah Chute (b. 21 August 1780), the daughter of James Chute and Mehitable Thurston.
John Poor was employed as a shoemaker, and possibly a farmer. Sources indicate the family was living in Jefferson County, Indiana prior to 1819. John and Hannah had 11 children: Amanda (b. 1798 and d. 1799), Wendell (b. 1799), Amanda (b. 1801), Alvin (b. 1803), Hannah Adams (b. 1804), Betsey Chute (b. 1807), Mehitabel Thurston (b. 1809), Susannah (b. 1811), Harriet (b. 1815), John Jr. (b. 1818), and Amelia Parish (b. 1820). All of the children were born in Massachusetts except John Jr. (born in Pittsburgh) and Amelia Parish (b. Gibson, Indiana).
John Poor, Sr. died 9 December 1819 near Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. His wife Hannah died 30 January 1872 in Loogootee, Martin County, Indiana.

Information in the collection.
Ancestry Library Edition. Available at: http://www.ancestrylibrary.com
The collection contains the ledger of John Poor documenting his shoemaking business for the years 1796–1820. The ledger provides receipts and expenditures for shoes and boots made and mended, customers’ names, travel expenses, and purchases of items such as brandy, rum, sugar, coffee, butter, cheese, calfskins, horsehides, and sheepskins. Poor occasionally notes time spent breaking flax, drawing timber, cutting bushes, and filling ditches.
The ledger also contains a family registry for the Poor family listing the births, deaths, and marriages of John Poor, Hannah Chute, and their children. Notations of this type are made up until the year 1872.
