Hadassah, a women’s Zionist organization was founded in New York City in 1912 by Henrietta Szold. Hadassah’s aim was "The propagation of Zionism in America, and the establishment of health and welfare for women and children in Palestine."
The name Hadassah refers to the Hebrew name for Queen Esther and it is also the Hebrew name for the myrtle, a hardy plant, which has remained an integral part of the Hadassah logo.
The Hadassah chapter in Hammond, Indiana was established in 1926. The group funded charities in Palestine and a hospital which was to become the most advanced medical institution in the Middle East. They supported the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The Hadassah chapter in Munster formed in 1969. The Illiana chapter of Hadassah formed in 1975. Out of these only the Illiana chapter still exists with one group, L’Chaim.

The majority of the records in this collection span the 1960–1970 decade.
The bulk of Box 1 contains bulletins from the Hadassah Hammond chapter. The bulletins are incomplete. A handful of bulletins from the Illiana and Gary chapters are included in this box. The finances records comprised in this file are of one statement of receipts and disbursement (1970), a receipt (1966), and four donation cards (n.d.).
Boxes 2 and 3 are comprised of yearbooks beginning in 1939 and ending in 1976. The issues are incomplete.
Miscellaneous materials included in Box 4 contain two raffle tickets, an award, and tree sales records.
