Sam M. Griffith was the Local Chairman of the United Transportation Union Enginemen of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. During his service in this post, he received communication from UTU counterparts in Washington D.C. regarding various labor disputes, financial settlements, and merger activities regarding railroads pertinent to his area in Lake County, Indiana. He lived in Hammond, Indiana in Lake County.

This collection holds materials pertaining to railroad financial activities, mergers, and related correspondence that were filed with or produced by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Many of the records date from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Finance dockets deal mostly with financial negotiations and agreements between various corporate bodies of either railroad company interests or railroad labor interests. The Legal claims deal with various legal disputes, mostly between railroad companies and railroad labor, but some instances have disputes between two railroad companies. Railroads appearing in this collection are: CSX, Seaboard Coastline, Chesapeake & Ohio, Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company, and the Southern Railway Company.
