BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Dr. George C. Kendle was born in Posey County, Indiana on 22 October 1853 to James M. Kendle (b. ca. 1821 in Indiana) and Josephine Louise Embree (b. 23 March 1832 in Indiana). George Kendle married Louise Smyth (b. November 1856) on 11 November 1879 in Gibson County, Indiana. The couple had at least two children: Ralph B. and Richard S.

Kendle went to Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York, established in 1859. He graduated in 1879 and practiced medicine in Abilene, Kansas for two years. Kendle returned to Indiana in 1881 and began private practice in Princeton, Gibson County.  According to the 1930 census, he was still living and practicing in Princeton.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of Dr. Kendle’s medical notebooks from his training at Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York and his patient account ledgers from his Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana practice.

The Bellevue Hospital Medical College notebooks span the years from 1877–79 and contain lecture notes and clinical observations. Topics addressed throughout these notebooks include the properties and functions of various anatomical systems such as the nervous, circulatory, digestive, and urinary systems. Prescription formulations and surgical methodologies are noted, as are illnesses like cancer, yellow fever, typhoid fever, smallpox, scarlatina, measles, catarrah, and puerperal fever and other obstetrical conditions. The clinical notes provide information on specific patient complaints, diagnoses, and treatments.

The patient account ledgers from Princeton, Indiana cover the years 1881–1911 and list patient names, expenditures, and receipts. Occasionally Dr. Kendle noted the patient’s occupation or other brief information next to the patient’s name. The ledgers do not provide detailed information on the nature of illnesses treated, but Kendle does indicate when he delivered a child and the sex of that child.
