historical/BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

The Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana is a conglomerate of various regional Jewish Federations (Hammond, Gary, and East Chicago).  Gary’s Jewish Federation was founded in the late 1930s.  The mergers occurred in the 1950s and 1960s.  The Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana has also gone through several names:  The Northwest Indiana Jewish Welfare Federation, to the Jewish Federation, Inc, and today The Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana.  The Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana is currently headed by Michael Steinberg.  They are located in Munster in northwest Indiana.   The Jewish Federation of Northwest dubbed the “United Way of the Jewish community” serves the Lake and Porter counties.  Scholarships, a food pantry, services for the youth and elderly are some of the programs instituted at the Jewish Federation.  Services are not limited to the Jewish community.

Illiana News, a monthly publication by the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana printed its first issue in 1975.  Illiana News continues to be published today.

Trent D. Pendley, current president of Indiana Jewish Historical Society edited and wrote for Illiana News.
