SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains two Civil War journals, 1863–1875, with portions of the journal transcribed (July 1863–Oct. 1865).  It documents his experiences during the war and to the final days of the war, to his journey home, his homecoming, his wedding, and the move to his farm. There is also a written and transcribed poem by William Brokaw, 1865, a friend of William Mallonee.  Also in the collection are two letters written to William’s future wife Rachel Archbold, 1864–1865, a Rachel Mallonee pension certificate, 3 supplement slips with envelope (ca. 1902–1917), 2 loan payment receipts (1909), and 2 deeds with a mortgage (ca. 1861–1911).  There are also seven Mallonee family photographs identified by the donor of William, his wife Rachel, and two of their daughters Margaret and Ida, and William’s brother Thomas (2 cased images, 3 tintypes, 1, postcard, and 1 cabinet card).
