historiCAL SKETCH

Between 1994 and 1996, as part of The Jewish Experience Oral History Project, eighteen Jewish men and women whose families had emigrated from Europe during the early twentieth century were interviewed.  All eighteen settled in the Michiana region, of South Bend and Mishawaka. The interviewees discussed how their families adjusted to their new lives in the United States. 

The interviewees were:  Helen Birdsell, Frederick Baer, Harry Coffman, Reah Newman Cohen, Mildred Dalberg, Florence Freman Fischgrund, Fannie Frank, Mildred Adler Frank, Alfred Fromm, Stanley Solomon Gilbert, Ann Glaser, Antoinette Opperman, Mendel Piser, Leo Plotkin, Milton S. Ries, Kurt Simon, Elsye Vodnoy, and Bess Welber.

The interviewers were Roger Birdsell, Executive Director of the Michiana Jewish Historical Society, Inc., as well as Elsye Vodnoy, Howard Schrager, Shirley Morse, Joseph Rubin, Tom Zoss, Cookie Alpern, and Bab Waks.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains 18 oral history interview transcriptions and related papers (1994–1996). The Michiana Jewish Historical Society sponsored the project.  The materials are arranged alphabetically.
