NOTES: |
This forms part of the records of the Indiana Jewish Historical Society Collection. |
Hillel, a campus organization for Jewish college students, was founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, and began to expand nationwide with the support of B’nai B’rith in 1924. Its purpose is to offer a broad variety of Jewish-related social, cultural, and religious activities to all Jewish students, bringing together and providing for the needs of students of different religious and ethnic backgrounds. In September 1939, the “Purdue Union of Jewish Youth” in West Lafayette, Indiana, became an official chapter of the Hillel organization. In 1951, Purdue Hillel moved into a new building at 912 State Street, where it remains today. In 1955 Rabbi Gerald (Gedalyah) Engel became the Director of Hillel at Purdue.
Most of the collection dates from Rabbi Engel’s tenure as Hillel Director and Director Emeritus. In addition to the student activities, Hillel became involved in the larger community with two significant projects. The first, the Committee for Human Rights in the Soviet Union, was founded to campaign on behalf of refuseniks in the Soviet Union. Engel and others began writing letters in the early 1970s and in 1977 formed an ecumenical committee to work for the release of specific refuseniks. One notable case is that of Irina McClellan, whose visa applications were denied for over eleven years before she was permitted in 1986 to join her American husband. Later that year, the McClellans made a visit to Lafayette to thank the community for their efforts in securing her release. The second project, the Greater Lafayette Holocaust Remembrance Committee, was founded in 1981 at the request of the mayors of Lafayette and West Lafayette to conduct an annual educational conference relating to the Holocaust. The committee is not an official Hillel organization, but Hillel provides sponsorship, meeting space, and many committee members. The committee conducted its 26th annual conference in March 2007.
Today, Hillel at Purdue continues to operate at the State Street building, offering services and activities for the approximately 7,800 Jewish students at Purdue. The current director is Philip J. Schlossberg, and Rabbi Engel remains active in the Lafayette community.

Materials in the collection
The collection was previously stored in file boxes in the basement of the Hillel building in West Lafayette. The original order of the documents and the original file folder labels have been retained wherever possible, although the series divisions are imposed. Most of the photographs were stored separately in the processors’ envelopes and have been listed with the appropriate series. Those photographs which were in file folders are listed next to their original folders.
The collection has been divided into five series, covering the Committee for Human Rights in the Soviet Union (Series 1), the Holocaust Remembrance Conference (Series 2), and general Hillel administration and activity. The Committee for Human Rights series contains accounts of activities, especially annual rallies, while related correspondence can be found in Series 4, Correspondence and Administration. The Holocaust Remembrance Conference series covers only the years 1980–89, with the bulk of the collection from 1988–89. A separately acquired collection covers more of the conference committee’s activities. Series 3, Newsletters, covers the period 1946–94 and includes letters and drafts for many newsletters. Series 5, General Materials, includes material that would be placed in the other series had the original order of files not been maintained.
