BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Hamilton W. Glezen (ca. 1828–1880) was born in Pennsylvania and settled with his family in Pike County, Indiana before 1850.  He became a doctor in 1860 and married Sarah F. Rose on October 4, 1861.  Eight days later, he enlisted in the Union Army and was mustered into E Company, 58th Indiana Regiment in December as a drummer although he was later transferred to the medical corps as an assistant surgeon to better utilize his civilian talents.  He was discharged in September 1862, possibly because of either his or Sarah’s ill health and returned to his medical practice. Sarah died in August1863 and in October 1864 he married Melona (or Malena) Rose, a younger sister of Sarah.  Hamilton returned to his medical practice after his enlistment at first Petersburg and later Otwell in Pike County where he was also a local minister in the Episcopal Church.  .

Sarah E. Rose (ca. 1837–1863) was from Bainbridge, Dubois County, Indiana.  After Hamilton went into the army, she lived with her parents.  Sarah Rose was ill for most of the time her husband was at war and died on August 12, 1863.

Charles O. Glezen  (ca. 1830–1881), Hamilton’s brother, was also in E Company of the 58th Indiana and was mustered in as a Sergeant.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection is made up of diaries, papers and photographs relating to Hamilton W. Glezen and his family. Among the three diaries written one is from 1853–59, probably written by Hamilton Glezen when he went to California to find gold.  It contains personal finances while in California and a very detailed description of the return trip to Indiana by ship in 1859.  The other two diaries were from Glezen’s Civil War experiences from 1861–62 when he was in the Union Army. The Civil War diaries begin on October 1, 1861 with his marriage to Sarah Rose and ends with his discharge at Evansville in September 1862.  Glezen writes of his recruiting duties for the first month at which time he was able to see his family and new wife. There is also information about camp life, family news including his concern for his wife’s continued ill health and information about caring for the sick and wounded as a member of the medical corps.  The final diary also announces Sarah Glezen’s death on August 12, 1863 and contains information regarding Hamilton’s duties as a local Episcopalian minister.

Included with the last diary were physician and minister licenses, correspondence from the Independent Order of Good Templars, and tax receipts, dated after the diaries. There is a poem written by Sarah F. Rose Glezen, an exchange note from Adams & Company Mog Hill, a collection note from Silver Mt. Valley, a letter of recommendation for doctor and surgeon written for Hamilton, and a Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery course certificate, 1860.

Also in the collection are three cased images and an artifact. Two of the cased images are tintypes of Sarah Glezen, and his brother Charles O. Glezen. The other is an ambrotype of Hamilton with a drum. The image of Charles Glezen in uniform shows him holding a revolver.  The artifact is a 32 caliber revolver held by Charles Glezen in the photograph and was made by Allen & Wheelock.
