NOTES: |
|
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) was founded in 1976 as Indianapolis Clean City, a private, not-for-profit organization. It changed its name in 1997, to better reflect its efforts in the community. It is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc.; the national organization dedicated to preserving the natural beauty and environment in American communities.
KIB unites people to beautify the city, improve the environment, and foster pride in the community. Their mission is to have a viable, sustainable impact on the lives of residents in the Indianapolis area and the neighborhoods in which they live. They do this through active partnerships with neighborhoods, businesses, schools, community leaders and government.
It is supported by a professional service contract with the City of Indianapolis, corporations, foundations, civic groups, and individuals. Volunteers are vital to KIB’s projects. In 2004, over 30,000 volunteers supported cleanup efforts and revitalized neighborhoods around the city. The volunteers contributed 114,000 hours of service by cleaning up litter, painting houses, planting trees and flowers, and assisting with special projects.
KIB has won many awards. On the local level they won the Carl Lile Partnership Award from Indianapolis Coalition for Neighborhood Development, the Golden Leaf Award from the Indiana Arborists Association, and the Indianapolis Housing Agency Clean & Green Award, for beautifying senior and disabled communities. On the national level it was the Keep America Beautiful President's Circle, for standards of excellence achieved by an affiliate, and the Great American Cleanup Award.
