In April 1942 the forces of the United States in the Philippines surrendered to the Japanese. Although abandoned, outnumbered and outgunned, the Americans had held the invaders for five months. Most of those still alive became remembered as part of the Bataan Death March. However, not all the American forces surrendered and some escaped the Death March. Approximately 400 United States soldiers formed small unofficial guerilla units with the aid of Filipinos and other local tribes such as the Huks and the Negritoes. They conducted information gathering and covert activities against the Japanese invaders for thirty-four months. Of the original number, it is estimated that about half survived the war.

This is part of the World War II oral history collection formerly located at the Ernie Pyle State Historic Site and was the result of interviews and research conducted by Indianapolis area military historians Wayne Sanford and Doug Clanin.
The bulk of the materials in this collection are transcripts of interviews with survivors of the resistance movement in the Philippines by U. S. and native participants. The interviews were conducted by Wayne Sanford and Doug Clanin in the early to middle 1980s. They took place during and around reunions including those in Indianapolis in September 1984 and September 1985. The interviews vary in length from a few pages to several hundred pages. Among the more prominent interviews are those of Clay Conner, Bernard Anderson, and Leon Beck. In addition to transcripts, there is accompanying correspondence and supporting historical material involving the participants including photographs and maps. There is also a substantial amount of official military reports and relative printed items regarding the resistance movement in the Philippines including copies of the official records from the National Archives and original orders, dispatches and documents from the Anderson Guerrilla group, 1943–48.
