NOTES: |
|
The Northwest Region of Indiana is well-known for its industrial surroundings. Located just east of Chicago at the tip of Lake Michigan, many steel mills and other industrial operations, such as oil refineries, chose Northwest Indiana as their location.
Charles F. Fleming is the subject of the scrapbook in the collection. Born in 1907 in Iowa, Fleming moved to Jasonville, Greene County, Indiana in 1913. By 1927 his family moved to Hammond in Lake County, Indiana. Around this same time Fleming began attending Xavier University. After a year at Xavier, Fleming switched to Indiana University where he received a bachelor’s degree in physical education. In 1935, he married Elenore Lucille Kmiec. He worked in the Sinclair and Socony-Vacuum Oil Companies between 1927 and 1947. In 1943, Fleming began his first term as a Senator. He also enlisted in the Army Air Corps that same year, receiving a dispensation to complete his first senate session before reporting for duty. Fleming continued in the Indiana Senate but then from 1948 to 1950, he served as the Secretary of State of Indiana. In 1959, he married Delores Mae Holland. Fleming died on August 8, 1984.

The scrapbook in this collection contains clippings and other ephemera related to the career of Charles F. Fleming. Most of the clippings deal either with his military or political appointments. There are some items that have been cut out of the scrapbook, leaving other clippings partially in tact.
The cassette tapes in this collection deal with different historical aspects of Northwest Indiana. The majority of the tapes discuss issues related to Lake County, but there is one tape that includes information about Morocco, Newton County, Indiana. The subjects included are Crown Point, both the Courthouse renovation and the Old Homestead, Lake County local history, Remembering Lake County, Calumet area Indians, and history of Morocco, Indiana. Narrators for these tapes are local residents and historians.
