BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Jean E. Schweer (1921–2003) was a professor at the Indiana University School of Nursing who helped revolutionize continuing education for nurses.  A graduate of Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, and Indiana University, Schweer joined the IU School of Education in 1955 where she established the first Graduate program in Medical-Surgical nursing.  In 1966 she developed a continuing education program at the IU School of Nursing at Indianapolis.  Before retiring in 1986 as associate dean of continuing education in nursing, Schweer helped define national standards for nursing continuing education.  In particular, she assisted in the development of nursing courses as far away as Saudi Arabia.

Ms. Schweer was involved in a number of professional associations including the Indiana Heart Association’s education committee, the Indiana State Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International and Pi Lambda Theta honor societies, and the IU Alumni Association.

During her tenure at Indiana University, she received the IU School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award.  She was also named Outstanding Adult Educator by the Indiana Association of Adult Continuing Education in 1986.  The Jean E. Schweer Distinguished Lectureship in Continuing Education was created in 1996 to honor Schweer for her numerous contributions to Indiana University, the nursing profession and continuing education across the country.  In 2002, she received the Emily Holmquist Lifetime Achievement in Nursing Award from the Indiana University School of Nursing.

Besides teaching and being involved with state and national organizations, Schweer also authored a textbook, Creative Teaching in Clinical Nursing (1968), and prepared several publications related to continuing nursing education.

Jean E. Schweer passed away on 16 February 2003; three days shy of her 82nd birthday.
