BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Judith Endelman graduated with a B.A. in anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1969.  After graduation, she remained at UCLA as the department secretary until 1971, when the job of assistant cataloger opened up at Wheelock College Library in Boston, Massachusetts.  While there she attended Simmons College, and worked on her masters’ degree in Library Science.  After graduating in 1972, she began work as the librarian at the Temple Beth Am Synagogue in Framingham, Mass.  Over the next five years she held several positions, including associate librarian at the American Jewish Historical Society in Waltham, Mass., and archival administrator at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, located in New York.  During this time, she worked on her masters’ degree in American Studies at Boston College, and graduated in 1977.

In 1982 she moved to Bloomington, Indiana, and was an assistant librarian at the Lilly Library of Indiana University.  Since 1986 she has worked at the Henry Ford Museum, where she is currently director of the Benson Ford Research Center.

In 1979 Endelman was hired by the Jewish Welfare Federation in Indianapolis to edit a history of the Indianapolis Jewish community.  Unhappy with the work that had been done to that point, she received funding from the Jewish Welfare Federation to continue researching and rewriting the project.  Late in 1979 she submitted a proposal to the Indiana Historical Society to help fund further research, editing, and publication. Work and research continued on the book until its publication by the Indiana University Press in 1984.

Endelman has written several articles on Jewish history.  She published articles in the American Jewish Historical Quarterly, The Journal of Jewish Genealogy, Toledot: The Journal of Jewish Genealogy, and Jewish Women in America.  She also worked as a book reviewer for the Library Journal beginning in 1976.

In addition to writing The Jewish Community of Indianapolis: 1849 to the Present, Judith Endelman has authored other works such as More Indiana Jewish History, published by the Indiana Jewish Historical Society in 1985, Religion in Indiana: A Guide to Historical Resources, published by Indiana University press in 1986, and Americans on Vacation, published in 1990 by the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.

Endelman is a member of the American Association of Museums, American Association of State and Local History, and the Organization of American Historians.  She is a board member of the National Association of Automobile Museums and was chair of the Education Committee for the Midwest Archives Conference.  She is also active in other organizations and is often asked to speak at conferences.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection contains the notes and resources used by Judith Endelman in the writing of her book, The Jewish Community of Indianapolis: 1849 to the Present.

The first series documents the preparation and research that went into creating the book.  Included within this series are the correspondence between Judith Endelman and the organizations that helped to fund and publish the book, the Jewish Welfare Federation in Indianapolis and the Indiana Historical Society.  Also included in the collection is the correspondence between Judith Endelman and various individuals, libraries, and archives requesting information on their holdings.

Among the resources used in the writing of the work are the histories, programs, newspaper clippings, and other documents related to the Indianapolis Jewish congregations of Beth-El Zedeck, B’nai Torah, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, and the United Orthodox Hebrew Congregation.  Also included are photocopied letters from Indiana branches of the Jewish Federation to the parent organization from December 1898–May 1899.

The first series also includes biographical information on the people discussed in the book.  Included in these resources are notes taken from interviews with Clarence Efroymson, professor of Economics at Butler University from 1935–68; Manuel Leve, president of the Indianapolis Jewish Welfare Federation in 1958; Frank Newman, Indianapolis Jewish Welfare Federation executive director from 1959–82; William Miller, Marion County deputy prosecutor beginning in 1926; and Julian Freeman, Indianapolis Jewish Welfare Federation president from 1949–53.  The collection also contains the rough draft of the Bernard Baum Memoirs and newspaper clippings, letters, and scrapbook pages concerning Sara Wolf Goodman.  Newspaper clippings, articles, encyclopedia entries and other documents discuss important individuals named in the book.  Recordings of interviews with Frank Newman, William B. Miller, and Bess Brenner are also included.  The interview of Bess Brenner was done by Gladys Nisembaum and Lee Barnett.

The collection also contains the correspondence with Elizabeth Weinberg from 1980–86.  It includes Weinberg’s paper on the Adath Israel congregation of Madison, Indiana.

Endleman also used secondary sources to describe the history of the Jewish community of Indianapolis.  These resources include; maps of Indianapolis, population statistics for the city, newspaper clippings, and articles from magazines, journals, and encyclopedias.  It also contains excerpts from Myra M. Auerbach’s 1933 thesis, A Study of the Jewish Settlement in Indianapolis, and a copy of a lecture on Ashkenazi-Sephardic Relations by Jack Glazier.

The first series also includes the research notes of the author and her descriptions of photographs that she was considering including in the publication.

The second series contains publications written by Judith Endelman.  Included are drafts of chapters four and five from The Jewish Community of Indianapolis: 1849 to the Present as well as commentaries and suggestions by others on her work.  There is also a draft of a lecture by Judith Endelman on Anti-Semitism in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, as well as notes and an outline for a television interview regarding the Indiana Jewish community.

Series three contains Judith Endelman’s research notes.  These 5x8-inch note cards have been removed from their original box and have been placed in folders.  The original labeling of the sections has been retained.  Subjects include; the Kirschbuam Center, Nathan Morris House, Montefiore Society, Hebrew Ladies Benevolent Society, Council of Jewish Women, Indianapolis Jewish Bruder Verein, the Indiana Jewish Tribune and many other topics.

The final series contains copies of photographs from 1875–1989 that were considered for inclusion in the book.  Photographs that were chosen for the book are listed first, in chronological order.  They are followed by the rejected photographs, also listed chronologically.
