BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Mildred Marshall Hall, daughter of William Henry and Nettie Belle Marshall, was born on 18 April 1911 on the outskirts of Indianapolis.  Like her father, she attended Indianapolis Public School #43 and then continued on to Shortridge High School.  When Crispus Attucks High School (CAHS) was built for African American students, she was one of many students mandated to go. She spent her last two years of high school at CAHS, graduating in 1929. Hall graduated from Butler University in 1948.

She married Luther E. Hall, Jr., on 28 December 1941. One son, Luther E. Hall, III, was born to this union.  Mildred Hall taught in the Indianapolis Public Schools system for 32 years, retiring in 1970. She spent 30 years at IPS #26 and 2 years at School #32.

Hall is a member of various organizations including the Urban League, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, National Council of Negro Women–Indianapolis Section, and the Butler–Tarkington Neighborhood Association.  She is also a longtime member of the Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church and is active in the Flora Grant Women’s Missionary Society.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection is contained in one document case and eleven oversize flat folders. They pertain to Mildred Hall and her work with the Red Cross Motor Corps, her career as a public school teacher, and her membership in the Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mildred Hall was a member of the Red Cross Motor Corps during World War II.  There are several pictures of Hall and her husband, Luther (a World War II veteran), in their uniforms.  There is also a group photo of a Service Men’s Club in Indianapolis.

Mildred Hall had an extensive career as a teacher with the Indianapolis Public Schools.  Many of the materials in the collection pertain to School #26.  Several photographs portray the students, faculty, staff, and administration of the school. There are various items that relate to the school’s 1987, 1996, and 1997 reunions.  There are eleven poster boards that have photographs and scanned images of school activities. These pertain to numerous events including a student field trip to Union Station, students in the classroom, student and faculty group pictures, arts and crafts exhibits, and school productions and reunions. There are also some newspaper clippings related to the school and to the Red Cross Motor Corps.

The collection contains two histories of Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church published in 1916 and 1944.  Hall compiled a notebook of the church’s pastors. There are scanned images of the pastors dating from 1881 and historical highlights of Allen Chapel between 1867 and 1995.  A church bulletin and information about the Flora Grant Women’s Missionary Society are also included. There are three booklets commemorating the church’s 85th, 125th, and 135th anniversaries in 1951, 1991, and 2001, respectively.

Several photographs of various Allen Chapel groups including the children’s choir, men’s chorus, nurses, usher board, stewardess board (Flora Grant Women’s Missionary Society), steward board, and the Board of Education are in the collection.  Other photographs portray the Allen Chapel building, Reverend Shepherd Hardrick, and an anniversary celebration in 1956.  Additionally, there is a 1948 photograph depicting the burning of Allen Chapel’s mortgage with Bishop Gregg officiating and Reverend H. H. Black participating.

The collection contains a booklet about the local branches of the African Methodist Episcopal Women’s Missionary Society of the Indiana Conference and a copy of the Utilitarian Church Professional and Business Directory of Indianapolis, Indiana and Marion County dated 1 June 1939.  Published by the Indiana Baptist Press, the directory contains the names and visuals of many of the African American ministers, churches, and businesses in Marion County. There are essays on religion and references to black organizations including the Aesculapian Medical Society and the Indiana State Baptist  Association. It also includes lists of Jewish and Anglo churches and several social service organizations.
