NOTES: |
|
Before Indiana officially became a state in 1816 pioneer settlers were using limestone for cabin foundations, memorials, door sills, and milling burrs. Indiana limestone, a light-colored, fine-grained stone, was then quarried by using long star drills and wedges to separate blocks from the main deposit. The earliest record of an organized quarrying effort was in 1827 in southern Indiana near Stinesville.
The market for Indiana limestone increased in the third quarter of the 19th century with the arrival of the railroads in southern Indiana and because of extensive fires in the cities of Chicago (1871) and Boston (1872). The railroads at that time required stone for bridge piers and the extravagant terminals in growing cities. It was becoming clear that of all the commonly used building materials limestone showed the most resistance to fire damage. Also during this time the channeling machine was introduced which enabled the industry to double and triple its production.
Late in the 19th century, Indiana limestone won awards and was chosen for use in an increasing number of city halls, statehouses, federal office buildings, banks, hospitals, churches, office buildings, and private residences, primarily east of the Mississippi River. To meet this demand the number of quarries doubled between the years of 1889 and 1895.
Through the 1920s the use of limestone continued to increase. Two advances helped in this increase. One involved the technical advances that were made in quarrying and fabrication techniques. The other was the development of the skyscraper. Architects designed the limestone to fit the changing styles of the period, and producers developed machines which provided the new surface textures required. With the start of World War II all construction not part of the war effort was halted, but with its end in 1945 limestone production resumed with much of its previous strength.
During the 1950s and 1960s the Indiana limestone industry weathered the changes in sales patterns due to shifting styles of architecture. In recent decades, with the increase in postmodern architecture, Indiana limestone once again became the building material of choice. The industry prepared to enter the 21st century with methods to increase productivity and the development of new machines.
Harding & Cogswell, Inc. (later renamed Harding & Cogswell, Corp.) was a limestone fabricating company founded in 1911 in Ellettsville, Indiana, by Alfred G. Harding and Percy Cogswell. During its early years the company prospered along with the limestone industry. In 1921 the company was incorporated. Due to the company’s strong management policies and its reputation for quality, it was among the few limestone fabricating companies to survive the economic collapse of the 1930s. It was one of many that temporarily shut down between 1941 and 1945 because of the war.
During the 1950s, Glen Summitt and William G. Cogswell (nephew of founder Percy Cogswell) had formed a separate corporation, Summitt & Cogswell, Inc., to meet the demand for cut limestone. This production facility was located near Stinesville in the old Swenson Stone Company plant. It operated for several years before being closed down, although Harding & Cogswell, Inc. used it until 1973 as a gang saw plant which furnished sawed slabs to its Ellettsville plant.
In April 1965, Glen Summitt became president of the company, succeeding William G. Cogswell upon his death. Glen Summitt’s father, K.B. Summitt, had been employed by Harding & Cogswell, Inc., since the late teens or early 1920s. He had served as production foreman and was one of the stockholders at the time of his death in 1955. Upon the death of Glen Summitt in November 1968, his son, F.G. Summitt, became president of the company.
In the early 1970s Harding & Cogswell devoted a major research and development program into the creation of improved products and techniques for textured panel wall systems. Because of these improvements, production output doubled and a new, larger, and more efficient production capacity was required.
On 19 October 1973, F.G. Summitt shut down the Ellettsville operations and the Stinesville gang saw plant, both known as Harding & Cogswell, Inc., and opened a new company in Bedford in partnership with Larry Evans of Bedford. The new business was actually two companies–one for sales and promotions (Harding & Cogswell, Corp.); the other for fabrication (Summitt and Evans, Inc.). Summitt did this in order to devote most of his time to promote and secure contracts for Indiana limestone and specifically the new tooled finishes that he had been experimenting with. Soon after, the company became the second-largest supplier of Indiana limestone, and the largest supplier of textured panel wall systems in the United States. Limestone fabricated by the company can be found throughout the U. S., in structures as well known as the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.; the NBC Building in Chicago; the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas; and the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis.
On 31 March 1998, F.G. Summitt retired and shut down operations of Harding & Cogswell, Corp. Its contracts on the books were fabricated by Larry Evans’ and Steve Evans’ (Larry’s son) newly formed company, Evans Limestone Company.

This collection contains selected groups of company records for Harding & Cogswell, Corp. Records contained within the collection include: project files, visual materials, printed catalogs, and financial records. The massive size of this collection prompted the decision to make portions of it available to the public now, with the possibility of adding other materials later. Among the materials still to be processed and not included in the collection at present are linen tracings (shop drawings) for projects and early personnel records.
Currently, Harding & Cogswell projects from 1948 to 1970 are available for use. Projects from the single year 1981 have also been included for comparative purposes. Several of the better-known projects that Harding & Cogswell worked on between 1981 and 1999, such as the U.S. Holocaust Museum, the NBC Building in Chicago, and the Indiana Historical Society building, have also been made available in light of the potential interest of researchers in these major projects.
Series 1, Projects: Originally, projects were sorted by the year the work was completed and then again alphabetically by contractor. Harding & Cogswell gave each project its own unique job number. Project files have been reorganized and are now sorted by job number. For several projects, the job number could not be identified. These files are listed at the end of the series in alphabetical order by project title.
In addition to the list of projects in this collection guide, the IHS Library maintains a database containing information on the projects. If researchers want to know about buildings in certain cities or states, or connected with specific contractors, IHS staff can provide that information as a report to the researcher. Please inquire at the reference desk if you need this kind of report.
Series 2, Visual Materials: This series includes slides, negatives, and photographs of many of the projects that Harding & Cogswell worked on, including the NBC Building in Chicago; the John Carter Brown Library in Providence, Rhode Island; and Market Square in Washington, D.C. Also included are photographs of limestone samples and a videotape of the fabrication of limestone at the Harding & Cogswell factory.
Series 3, Catalogs: The series contains catalogs (and other printed advertising) of Harding & Cogswell showing examples of textures that were available for use. There are also specifications for limestone use, and catalogs highlighting buildings that H&C had worked on.
Series 4, Financial Materials: This series includes over 10,000 canceled checks written by Harding & Cogswell from 1924–32, reflecting all the company’s financial transactions from this early period. There are also a cash book, company ledgers, and monthly statements.
